August 2024 PPYC Board Meeting
August 22 6:30pm at iWerx, North Kansas City
Attending: Steve Nelson, Dru Rachaner, John Miller, Bill Blackwood, Mike Doherty, Chuck Jenkins, Mark Foster, Dave Cockrill
Club Elections
October Elections – are scheduled during the October PPYC social. Steve will send an email asking for folks who are interested in serving on the board to notify him.
Slip Winterization – Sailboat Cove
Winterization of the docks with aerators by the County was discussed. Mike and Steve will prepare a diagram of recommended placement to submit to the County. Last year’s placement was not good. There have been stretches of -10 degree days for the last two years. Mark will submit pictures of past winters.
Sweet 16s and Sea Scout mentoring
Sweet 16 usage was discussed. Mike will update 2016 procedure and provide onsite support for the use of Sweet 16s. Learn to Sail students are interested. Liability is covered for club members. Mark had drafted a release which will be reviewed. We want to do a trial run in September.
Sea Scout support was discussed. Dru is coordinating the contact with the Pleasant Valley Sea Scout Ship. Five board members met with the group on August 21 and Dru is working up a plan to take 3 Sea Scouts and their Leader out for intro sail in September.
Planned Expenditures 2024 and 2025
Current cash balance of $14,500. Multiple topics/suggestions that were submitted by club members of how to spend some of the money were discussed. Vote was passed to keep a minimum cash balance reserve in our account of $5,000.
One suggestion was a PA system to help with socials and Memorial Day service. The purchase of a $200 system was approved and Bill will procure it for club use.
The trailer needs revisions – remove sink and install additional shelving for more storage. Steve and Dru will coordinate.
The name signs on each slip were discussed. Dru will coordinate removal of names of those who have left the lake / club. John suggested a vendor and technique to replace existing signs and provide for ongoing updates for new members. Dru is looking into options.
WiFi for docks/shelter with cameras that give view of each of the docks was considered. John is looking into costs, equipment needed, etc. After a cost determination is made (both initial installation and ongoing), we would need to investigate what County involvement would be.
Before a larger expenditure will take place, the board will want to hear from members. Expenditures will be focused on how the most dues paying members would benefit.
Club Socials and member participation
Club participation in socials was discussed. We will work to get more folks involved in hosting next year.
The Board approved a proposal to continue to cater April & October socials, and possibly add a summer catered event.
Meeting was adjourned at 7:40pm
PPYC 2024 Board Planning Meeting January 27, 2024
Attending: Steve Nelson, DruRachaner, Bill Blackwood, John Miller,
Katherine Miller, Chuck Jenkins, Mark Foster, Dave Cockrill, Mike
Doherty.
Steve called the meeting to order at 9:29.
Social Media Update
Kat Miller updated the board on Instagram and Facebook.
The Facebook and Instagram Social Media sites will continue to be
heavily used in 2024. Both sites are linked. Hashtags are being used
to get wider distribution especially from Instagram site. The goal is to
post pictures and information weekly during the sailing season. Items
posted on Instagram automatically post to Facebook.
There will be links for Sailing Class registration on all three sites
(Instagram, Facebook and PPYC web site).
It was decided that sailing pictures from places club members visit can
be posted to the PPYC sites.
The board will ask club members to wear PPYC shirts in pictures to
help promote the club. One of our goals for 2024 is to grow
membership.
Mike Doherty reported that the expense for the club web site will be
about $250 for 2024.
The home page on paradisepointyachtclub.org needs a significant
update. Send pictures to Mike.
A new Webmaster is needed. Mike will be retiring from the post at the
end of the year. Several names were suggested and will be contacted.
John Miller has a potential location for hosting the web site. He will
investigate the availability and report to the board.
Steve Nelson will send out a club wide email requesting volunteers
from the club to take over the webmaster duties.
It was decided to have two folks receive all inbound emails to the club
rather than the blanket approach used today where all members of the
board receive the request and no one is identified to respond. Steve
and Dru will be the focal point for the start of 2024 sailing season.
Messages from Facebook will go to the same focal point.
Budget Review
Bill Blackwood reported the 2023 ending balance is 8314.75
The Liability Insurance carried by the club was reviewed by Chuck
Jenkins. It is a major expense – $1200 – but seems to be the coverage
the club needs.
Membership Issues
New member MENTOR program was discussed. To get folks involved,
a short bio with boat picture should be placed on the web site.
The program for Mentor for the Learn-To-Sail students and New
Members will be implemented. Steve has a document he will share.
Dock C rep was discussed. Candidates will be approached by Steve
to determine interest.
Venmo users should say that they are “paying a friend” to avoid a
charge.
The Dock Reps will try to recruit non members on their docks. The
spreadsheet will be updated for current slip holders with boat names
and slips. Members will be identified and non-member slips identified.

A map of the lake will be developed showing where NOT to sail.
